The Sport of Fitness vs. Anthos Will Greg Glassman Win?

CrossFit vs. Anthos is the talk of the town.  Who knows how this will shake out, but everyone from Greg and Lauren Glassman to HQ staff and affiliate owners have weighed in on the subject.  I will give you a brief summary then share my opinion on the matter and what it means for affiliate owners.

Anthos is venture capital firm that has offered to buy Lauren Glassman’s share of CrossFit Inc. for 20 Million. Not a bad pay day. Bryan Kelly one of the board members at Anthos told CF that their vision was to use the 4,000 affiliates worldwide to sell supplements, T-shirts and other products that will greatly increase the bottom line for CF Inc.  This implies that there will be rules and regulations to follow.  Unlike now with the simple licensing agreement and freedom to run your affiliate as you choose. The RX Review has a great article with a quote from Russel Berger, who is on the CF level one certification staff.

There is also great thread on the CrossFit discussion board, check it out HERE.  Coach Glassmans quote is in this thread.  In summary his quote to the community reads…

“Anthos will NOT end up with an equity share in CrossFit. They’re holding a losing hand and will eventually come to terms with that fact. I’m honored to fight this fight and consider the opportunity and responsibility to lead the affiliates as the most significant facet of my life. None of it is for sale – at any price. I don’t care what this costs or how long it takes, we will keep our affiliates free.” -Greg Glassman

In my opinion this is a serious matter because the sport of CrossFit, the name and brand is something I have grown to love.  I think many others will voice the same opinion.  It would be terrible to see a venture capital firm come in and change the outlier into a conformed straight edge, rule book business.  It is pure, fun, and there are little to no rules to owning an affiliate.  The ability to sell your own products, choose your own colors and design your own logo is amazing.  A beautiful fitness community has been built in this over saturated market, hopefully it continues to grow and prosper without the interruption of money hungry venture capital suits.

As for the business  side of things, it should be something you keep up with, but not loose sleep over.  If you are established people will not leave you, if you are building your business, continue to put out an excellent product and you will succeed.  The people who spend time studying business, building a superior team of coaches, working on their marketing, and developing new and innovative ways to grow will prosper with or without the CrossFit name.

Now it is your turn.  Voice your opinion in the comments below and let me know your thoughts?

If you want the opinion of someone who is happy about all this, Robb Wolf whose affiliate was dethroned a few years ago has some interesting comments on his Facebook page.  You can check them out HERE.

And if you want to read up on Anthos, check out their website.

Geo, good post. I think it would be terrible to have them take over. I do hear that GG has a bit of an ego though. I think this has to do with his divorce, but either way I hope he can save the community from turning into a cooperate run business.

Thanks SammyJ. I agree I have heard stories about his ego. Robb Wolf always has an earful to say about that, but I do not know him personally so I can not speak on the matter. I agree though hopefully he makes the right decision and is able to fight for freedom.

Alright seriously this could be a good deal. It will provide some structure and filter out all the affiliates that are garbage. I think something needs to happen and Anthos may not be the right deal, but they can’t survive off this model forever.

      Tomkins,

I will agree, but this deal must go. I do not know GG personally, but if he is posting about not wanting this deal done then it can’t be good for the community. He has done a great job representing CF and the community for so long I have to trust his judgment.

I know he let Reebok in, but he did that in the best way possible as far as affiliates go…

I am not an affiliate owner. I am a hopeful affiliate owner. I reached out to you a few days ago asking for advice. How will this effect us, I know you mentioned it briefly in the article you posted, but do you have more insight on it.

      Julie,

I feel your concern. The CrossFit name has so much power now that it will effect new gyms if the name loses power and this whole takeover goes through. That will not change the fact that you can do 21-15-9 of pull ups and thrusters and call it Fran. Couple that with highly effective coaching, inteligent programing and a good marketing plan and you will be just as successful as the other gyms now.

People love CF because the core of the program, the community and the coaching. If you can develop that your set. CF will help you, but it will not make or break you. Personally I have know a few people who have opened garage gyms and chosen not to use the CF name and they are doing just fine!

      Hope this helps.

        Geo,

Thanks that does help a ton. I will keep up to date with your posts for advice. Either way though, you are right it will have an effect on the bottom line! Hope I can get open soon!

I think there is some new information out. It seems like Bryan Kelly has been a CrossFiter and wants to protect the brand also…

I like your point, this will have an affect, but the bottom line is there are too many loyal affiliates. If shit hits the fan then people will drop the CF name in a second.

What about this video she posted on Youtube? In it she interviews Bryan and he insists that he has no ties to any supplement or fitness companies who want to sell their products. He also says he has no interest in telling affiliates how to run their business. Venture capitalists with their investments CAN make a company stronger in the long run.

      OMG,

Thanks for sharing. I hear ya, it can make a stronger company and could be a good thing. It is is just hard to think of CF changing in anyway, but the argument is you must GROW and EVOLVE.

Let’s just keep it pure and simple and I am sure everyone will be happy!

How did you come across this video?
