3 Questions Every Box Owner Should Ask Themselves

I continue to wonder how some people get in such high positions (you know the boss who is a terrible leader or the principle who can’t manage).  They just climb the ranks and we end up with terrible leaders in schools, business and government.  Who is the bosses boss? Well, in our met con community who is checking up on the box owners?

The correct answer is NOT A DAMN PERSON.  The members are the only people holding the box owners accountable.  No members = no gym, which is a big deal so you better keep the people satisfied.  But, you do not strive for satisfied, right?

Take a second to step down from your soap box and do some good ‘ol  self reflecting.  Everyone needs a good sit down to evaluate their company and ways they can improve.  Here are three questions that will make you think twice about the efficiency of your business instead of the efficiency of your clean.  Take a load off, be critical and answer these questions honestly.

Are you genuinely creating workouts that will make your community stronger, faster?

What is the sole purpose for CrossFit? What is the main reason we actually make a living in these warehouses with rubber and steel?  We improve fitness levels.  Without fitness there are no communities, cool t-shirts or bad ass pull up rigs.  We all know CrossFit cleanses the soul and develops friendships stronger than family.  But, the essence, the pure CrossFit motto is to improve fitness.

It is very easy to implement the knowledge learned at the level one cert and make some type of improvement in tons of everyday people.  Over 4,000 affiliates programming over 4,000 WOD’s, do this, daily.  Are some better then others? HELLS YES.  Everyone is moving, lifting heavy things and seeing improvements, which is good, but is it great?

Are you doing the best job you can for your members to get the most efficient improvements that are physically possible?

Can you improve on their improvements? It is not an easy question to answer and it will take some data to track it, but this is your passion and your lively hood so embrace the challenge.

If you want to be the best and get unbelievable stories then you need to provide the best.  Challenge yourself to evaluate your programming, tweak it and learn what works even better than what you are doing now.

Are you surrounding yourself with the best possible team?

Every box has coaches, some have 2 some have 20.  The numbers are not significant…it is the quality we care about.  As a crossfitter you have been saying quality over quantity for years right? Same thing applies to the trainers, coaches and leaders in your gym.

I have written about How to Train your Trainers, but you need to ask yourself today, as the leader if you are putting together amazing coaches or just good people?  “We are not rep counters or cheerleaders” they tell us at the Level One cert.  “We are a new breed of trainers.”  What have you done develop the winning breed that drives not only great results and yells sweet coaching ques, but helps develop a community and take a leadership roll in the box and in life?

What have you done in the past 3 months to grow your community?

From day to day operation to events and special occasions.  Everything from the killer referral program you have in place to the sweet paleo pot luck you hosted last month.  Write down the major events and list the daily systems you have in place.  Then take a good hard look and figure out where you can improve.  We are all about adding 5 lbs to our clean and jerk.  Well what about 1 new system that will drive in 1 new member every week.  Is that worth it to you?

It is easy to breeze over this and think you got that in the bag and move on.  As I said in the beginning spend some time on these.  Make a list and answer them honestly.  If there are holes then fix them.  Now is the time to build not tomorrow.

Awesome questions! They are key to working on your business rather than in it. I especially like #2 and #3 they are both interrelated and essential for growing your CrossFit box
